Hi Jaan!

Well, I havn't seen many German movies recently. I looked up a database and I saw some movies from 2004:
(T)Raumschiff Surprise – Periode 1: Its a parody by Bully about Startreck, a well known American tv series about a starship in a distant future. I really like "Der Schuh des Manitu" from Bully, which is so funny, but this one was quite bad in my opinion. Maybe it's because Startreck is also very boring? ;)
Alles auf Zucker!: My father liked that TV movie, so I watched it, too. But I didn't liked it that much.
Der Untergang (English Title: The Downfall): It is a movie about the last days of nazi Germany. The suicide of the leaders of nazi Germany like Hitler etc. Quite realistic, but I'm not sure, if you are looking for that kind of movie.
Der Wixxer: Pure nonses, but funny. It is a parody mainly of the Edgar-Wallace movies
Jazzclub – Der frühe Vogel fängt den Wurm: A movie of Helge Schneider. I don't think, that movie will work in another language than German ;)

My alltime favorits of the German cinema are
Lola rennt (Run, Lola, Run): A very different movie about a Girl running through Berlin to rescue her boyfriend ;)
Der Schuh des Manitu (Manitou's Shoe): Very funny parody about Karl May
Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod – Gloomy Sunday: A sad movie about a love triangle with two guys and a girl in the time of the world war II (which gives only for the background).

Hello Jaan,

actually I think that there are some really good German movies. The latest is:

"Sophie Scholl - die letzten Tage" - it also plays at the time of the Nazi-Regime and deals with the life of a young woman who fights bravely against the regime and finally gets killed by it.

The movie got several prices and was also nominated for the Oscar 2006. It should be definitely available on DVD in the shops.
Here is a link with some more info: http://www.sophieschollmovie.com/

Furthermore I like very much some German comedies, which have a great sense of humor:
- Der bewegte Mann (most funny German movie I know)
- Stadtgespräch
- Knockin on heaven´s door (Til Schweiger, Moritz Bleibtreu)

Furthermore:

- Bandits with Katja Riemann - contains a lot of good music!
- Das Experiment with Moritz Bleibtreu - contains great psychology

Enjoy these - if you let me know which types of movie you like, I can give you more names / tips regarding the same genre.

By the way: Do you watch the movies in German or English?

Greetings Moskito

Hi!

Yeah, I have also seen "Der bewegte Mann", but I don't recall much of it, because I saw the movie 12 years ago. But I liked it back then. ;) "Bandits" is also good.

But I'm not sure, if "Das Experiment" is your kind of movie. It is not allowed to sell or show this movie to people younger than 16 in Germany, because it is quite havy. It is about an experiment, where volunteers are divided into two groups. One are the guards of a prison and one are the prisoners. But the experiments goes wrong, and the guards to more and more brutal things to the prisoners. It shows, how nice people around you can become wrongdoers, if the surrounding environment supports to a certain extent their doings.

If you are interested in this kind of things, I recommend you to read the book "The Wave" by Morton Rhue. It is a novel based on a real experiment in a school in America about students, who claim, that something like "Nazi Germany" can't become real in America. Very interesting!

But back to movies: Another good movie is "Keiner liebt mich" (Nobody Loves Me) by Doris Dörrie. Like "Gloomy Sunday" it was recommended to me by a Korean. ;)

Gruß, Johannes

Hi iGEL,

I guess if the liked "Der Untergang"  she might be able to cope with Das Experiment - eventhough I agree with what you said, that the movie is kind of "heavy".

Generally I don't like German movies so much but some of them I find quite good:

- 'Das Experiment'
http://german.imdb.com/title/tt0250258/
- 'Das Wunder von Bern'
http://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Wunder-NON-USA-FORMA…?ie=UTF8
- 'Bandits'
http://www.amazon.com/Bandits-Katja-von-Garnier/…?ie=UTF…
- 'Jenseits der Stille'
http://www.amazon.com/Jenseits-Stille-Caroline-L…?ie=UTF…
- 'Gegen die Wand'
http://german.imdb.com/title/tt0347048/
- 'Good Bye Lenin" was a very popular movie in Germany.
http://www.amazon.com/Good-Bye-Lenin-Wolfgang-Be…?ie=UTF…
- I guess 'Speer und Er' (Speer was a Nazi and Er means Hitler) is a very interesting movie but I didn't watch it (yet).
http://german.imdb.com/title/tt0401984/

I don't like German comedies like "Der Schuh des Manitu" or "Der bewegte Mann" and I don't find them funny at all but indeed it depends on one's personal taste.

Hi Chang Min,

First of all Welcome to this Forum ;-)

To be honest I dont think that Korean People likes German Comedies so I would better recommend Movies like "LoveKorea" did for Non German Native Speakers ;-)

German Humour is not so easy to understand and to be honest Movies like
-  Surprise"(Spaceshuttle Surprise)
- "Schuh des Manitu" (Shoe of Manitu)
are not that Great!

Just my Opinion!

I agree with Martin.

I think movies like "Der Schuh des Manitu" are not likely to be understood in Asia.
Actually I also don´t like them and think that there are much better German movies.
I also support the choice of "LoveKorea" and can strongly recommend "Jenseits der Stille"

Greetings

Hi!

I disagree. Of course, some jokes only work in German and of course a parody is better, if you know the original, but generly I think, that these movies work. I have been asked by Koreans, if I like Korean movies, even though many things are lost, if I just read the subtitles. But I like them anyway.
